We have always colored Easter eggs. We take a photo of the completed batch and then they go in the fridge, so they don't spoil. No one looks at them much after that, except when cracking open the shells to eat them. It's always such a shame. But this year (thanks to a homeschool club meeting where we learned about Russian eggs), I looked into coloring "blown eggs". These keep forever because you drill a tiny hole on each end and blow out the raw egg. I was too afraid of salmonella to actually put my mouth on a raw egg, but my friend Shanda had no such reservations!
So, along with the traditional hard boiled, we colored "keep forever eggs" with her family (and extended family) this year. Granted, a few unfortunate accidents have happened already, so "forever" is a bit of an exaggeration, but we definitely have had much more enjoyment and decorating value this time around! It may not be authentic, but Sharpies work great to color designs on eggs. You can dye them first, then draw on them -- or sometimes even vice versa! Or color the whole thing with Sharpies -- they actually leave a nice sheen. And this project is fun for everyone -- my five year old did great too!
